George Perez Convention Sketches

Who doesn't love themselves some George Perez? Yeah, I didn't think so. Feast your eyes on the samples below!

Note: I penned this around a week before Perez announced his retirement from penciling comics. The Twitterverse marked the occasion with sadness, tribute, and well wishes. I'll extend all of that from this space as well. What a talent, and oh how much joy the man brought me over the years. A treasure, to be sure.

  1. Yeah, I always loved Perez; his Titans stuff is unbeatable. Actually, all his team books were great ... JLA, Avengers ... I bet he would've done a cool X-Men.

    1. Hey, Mike - two times in a row you're the first one in!

I agree - nary a bad job from Mr. Perez. I liked all of his early stuff, from Avengers to Inhumans, to the FF. The guy certainly improved throughout the late 70s and into the 80s. I recently reread Crisis on Infinite Earths and was once again amazed at the incredibly high level of detail and superlative overall quality of the project. If that's not his magnum opus, I am uncertain what would be.

If you've never seen X-Men Annual #3, definitely worth a look!

    2. Oh, yeah. X-men Annual #3 or, as I call it, the best annual ever. Perez doing X-men was not only cool, it was magnificent.

  2. Beautiful, beautiful with a huge side order of beautiful. And when you've finished with how beautiful this stuff is, there's a whole lake of beautiful to dive into.
Y'know what I always liked about Perez? The way he did rubble.
No really, check out the aftermath of any of his explosions, and check out how he does rubble. I always liked it anyway...

    1. The scene early in Bride of Ultron, when Jarvis happens upon the team (apparently dead) and a large hole blown through the mansion - great stuff!

  3. Hiya,

Several years ago I asked at BAB a simple question that went something like this; How many Bronze Age creators were still not only working but producing quality material?

George Perez was foremost in my thoughts. The man is simply so talented at many different aspects of the industry I can only hope that he can continue on in some form.

Thanks for sharing the images, even though they now have a bitter sweet twang to them.

    1. Understood. I also hope he does a special project here and there. But I understand his health has not been the greatest, and his hands have betrayed him at times recently.

    2. Hiya,

What I'm hoping is that since he demonstrated some really good writing chops on Wonder Woman is that he might be able to pen either a series or special project or considering serving as an Editor in some manner.

One door closes and another opens. Or at least I hope.

  4. What everyone else said. I'll just add - based on pretty much every photo I've seen of him at conventions - he also has impeccable taste in shirts.

  5. That Impossible Man / FF sketch is so good. The reactions - full of irritation - are perfect.

I really enjoy Perez’ FF. His run there is overshadowed by the Avengers and Teen Titans work, but it is stellar.

  6. Those are some spectacular drawings! Perez remains nothing short of spectacular. Love that FF page. Also the Wonder Woman; reminds me how phenomenal his work on that title was. He certainly has a magnificent body of work to reflect upon...
