Mirthful Marie Severin - a Marvel Mainstay!

Righting a wrong today, kids. If memory serves - and it generally fails me - today's the first celebration of a female creator. Too long in coming, I say.

What do you think of when you think of Marie? Her humor work? Her runs on the Incredible Hulk, Sub-Mariner, or Dr. Strange? What about her role as art corrector, colorist, and general "whatever it takes to keep this thing rolling" problem-solver? Whichever, I'm sure you'll find something to connect with in the exhibits below.

Continued "Thanks!" to all the fine people who share their original sketches and art pages so that the rest of us can "Ooh!" and "Aah!" at them.

And we'll sign off today with this tour de force of King Kull - penciled by Marie and inked by her brother, John Severin. Masterpiece!

  1. To me, there's no question that Severin has an equal place among the ranks of the best artists who mainly appeared on the scene in the 1950s and had long careers in comics thereafter, like her big brother John, Steve Ditko, Wally Wood, Al Williamson, the whole Mad crew, etc. It's also noteworthy that besides a penciler and inker extraordinaire, she was also a top-notch colorist.
Thanks for highlighting her work, Doug, and also, again, for finding so many great images - a few of which (those convention sketches from the 1990s) I'd never seen before.

    1. Edo, when I was framing the post I almost erred and typed "art director" in describing Ms. Severin. It's a title she did not hold, but I think her hands were obviously all over the Marvel Universe in the Silver and Bronze Ages. She was "there for it all"!

      Doug
