Happy Birthday to Me - Please Allow the Indulgence!

The big 5-3 today (if that's a commemorative birthday, which I think it is not).

I thought today I'd just give myself the present of some art by some of my favorite artists - black & white or otherwise. So I hope you'll allow me to entertain you with some stuff that entertains me. Enjoy!

Neal Adams draws the best of two worlds:

John Buscema Conan sketch. Funny thing is, I used to own this and sold it a few years ago. I found this image laying around the Web! Guess someone else liked it, too!

John Byrne does the Avengers - nuff said!

John Romita's Spider-Man cast - absolutely nothing NOT to love here.

Curt Swan's Superman - the way I "see" the Man of Steel in my mind's eye.

Dave Cockrum drew the X-Men and the Legion of Super-Heroes, launching them to renewed stardom and immediately preceding memorable runs by John Byrne and Mike Grell, respectively.

And to round things out today, how about a little Gene Colan Daredevil - with some assorted nasties, no less?

  1. Happy Birthday Doug! And thanks for giving us all the gift of some fine comic art. Great selections all. That Conan sketch is wonderful, loose and gestural (a term from my art school days). Really shows Buscema's energy.

The Cockrum drawings are also sharp. And the Byrne Avengers- perfect. Ahhh, every one of these you posted is a winner!

  2. Happy birthday, Doug (I turned 53 back in February - we are both 1966 babies).

As a life-long Conan fan (introduced to the character by Marvel in 1975) it goes without saying that John Buscema's Conan is iconic and I'm also delighted that Conan has recently returned home to Marvel.

    1. Thanks, Colin. I have become more and more the Conan fan over the years. I'd really like to read some of the Dark Horse series by Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord. The Dark Horse trades are still available sometimes, but I also understand that Marvel is going to reprint those tales in their Epic Collection line.

  3. Happy birthday, Doug, and many, many more.
And yeah, great images. Love 'em all, but esp. the ones by Byrne and Cockrum.

    1. Hi, Mike - thanks for the well wishes.

The two John Romita Artist Editions I have are indeed treasures. Like you said, I could look at his line work all day.
