Beautiful Works by Nestor Redondo

I am pretty certain the first time I encountered the art of Nestor Redondo was in the pages of the lone issue of Rima the Jungle Girl I ever owned. Even as a then 7-year old, his work was lush, the backgrounds beautiful. Seeing it in color was one thing... seeing the original art is quite another. About a year ago I read (for the first time) the seminal issues of Swamp Thing. Redondo replaced Bernie Wrightson on the book. I was immediately taken back to that appreciation of his work I'd had over 40 years earlier. One of the masters.

  1. "One of the masters." QFT.
I love Redondo's work, and think it looks good in both color and b&w.
By the way, that's a great photograph up top; the paintings behind him look really nice - I wouldn't mind seeing a portfolio of those.

    1. I have been educated today. Despite working with teens, I had to go to the urban dictionary to decode "QFT". Thank you.

Redondo is just fabulous. I loved his tenure on Swamp Thing. DC (or whoever holds licensing) needs to get Rima the Jungle Girl reprinted.

    2. Didn't know that abbreviation/expression was that arcane. I feel so young and hip now...
But yeah, I agree, the Rima material really needs to be reprinted.

  2. Great artist well worth some attention, Doug. I agree with you, Redondo's work is indeed fabulous. I too discovered him in the pages of Rima. His line work, shading and crosshatching is stunning. Look at the big bottom panel of the first page you represented above. The delicate shading on Rima's left arm, the shadows her hair casts on her back, the coat of the tiger- WOW. An illustration worthy of any fine arts museum in the world...

    1. The level of detail is stunning. This is work that needs to be enjoyed in a large format, such as an Artist Edition (hint, hint - you listening, IDW Publishing?).

    2. Yeah, Rima had some fantastic artwork. I got a few back issues not so long ago - the quality seems to be something of a well kept secret, so they don't seem hard to find or cost very much (not that I'm complaining)
So - no excuse for just having the one issue Doug(:
Get the right ones and in addition to Redondo's Rima you also get some absolutely astonishing work by the mighty Alex Nino on the Space Voyagers back up.

Also, a quick shout for Redondo's rather fabulous take on the Black Orchid, seeing as no one else has mentioned it yet.

  3. Congratulations on this new blog, Doug. I've only just discovered it thanks to you mentioning it on BiTBA yesterday - but Edo and Redartz knew! Anyway, I'll go back and read all the posts I missed :)

  4. I have to admit I've never seen a lot of Redondo's artwork, although I think I've got a few DC "mystery" mags featuring his work. Will have to dig them out and will definitely have to look for copies of Rima the next time I'm at a comic con.

Oh, and I thought"QFT" meant "quantum field theory"... shows what I know ;-)
